Night of the Sentinels Artist Profile: Bernce Llamo

When graphic artist Bernce Llamo is not busy appearing in TV, you can find him reading comics either starred by his favorite heroine Emma Frost or drawn by one of his idols, Joe Madureira. Friends fondly call him "Jumad" of the Philippines because of his dynamic manga-inspired art style seen in his works for  Hollowpoint Comics and Drumfish Productions.

Catch him this Saturday, May 31 at the artist alley of Kapow! Universe's Night of the Sentinels event, to be held at the second floor of Glorietta 5.

What inspired you to start drawing?

When I was a kid I love to draw as much as I love to play outdoors. I don’t remember having an inspiration other than the smell of fresh sharpened pencil.

Did you take any formal lessons?

It wasn’t clear to me what I wanted until a friend of mine enrolled in fine arts-advertising. I remember a juror asked me during my thesis defense if I was going to be an effective advertiser.  I answered “no” because I wanted to be an illustrator.

Where do you get your creative inspiration from?

Probably from my family (I'll be honest, I don’t know what to say here hahahaha)

What tools do you use for your drawings?

Pencils, mechanical pens, and papers (of course).  I’ve always wanted to use poster paints again.

How long do you usually spend on one artwork?

An hour at least, it depends on my mood. I usually do my drawing stuff after work when I get home.

Which artists intrigue you?

Joe Madureira was truly an inspiration. Jim Lee started my curiosity and excitement... and a handful of other artists who I love to meet someday.

What projects are you working on?

I have a 10-page anthology for Drumfish Productions coming out soon. Blank covers, Layout projects and book illustrations.

What is your most memorable project so far?

Atlas Publishing  gave me a break with Jolly Kids Comics and other comics titles.

Was there ever a time that you have doubted your creative ability? How did you overcome it?

YES!!! I just learned to appreciate what I can do and accept that it happens and whenever in doubt (again) a chocolate bar or a mug of cold chocolate drink plus a good set of music ought to do the trick.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists?

Art is not just about what you create, it’s what you make people believe you can create.

Random question, if you were a superhero, what will be your codename and superpowers?

Diamond skin and telepathy... XD or space displacement. I’ll just stick with my name.
